FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

What is the effect of applying our AquaFuel system?

Fuel-water emulsions lead to an equalization of the temperature distribution in the combustion chamber and a lowering of the peak temperatures. In this way, pollutants generated in the combustion process are clearly reduced: particulate matter (diesel exhaust)
up to 90%, nitrogen oxides (NOx) up to 40 % and carbon monoxide (CO) up tp 70 %.

Is there an impact on the durability of the engine?

The durability of the engine is not affected. The use of our Aquafuel system may even lead to a longer durability, because lower and more consistent combustion temperatures can provide for less wear on engine parts.

Is the lubrication of the engine reduced by the water?

No. With our system, the fuel-water mixture is injected directly as an emulsion into the combustion chamber. The water "evaporates" at once, so there is no direct contact with any sensitive components of the engine. This has been proved in a long-term test (since 1999) of one of the forerunners of our current systems.

How much space does the system require? What connections are needed?

The system is very small in relation to the engine. Depending on the system size, it needs from about 0,5 m² (small)  to about 2,0 m² (large). It should be placed near to the engine for it has to be integrated into the fuel supply system. A water supply is needed as well as a power supply.

What water should be used for the mixture? Are additional tanks required?

It uses ordinary tap water. Therefore no additional tanks are required, as the water can be obtained from the normal drinking/supply water tanks. A protection of the drinking water system (media separator) is part of the system, thereby ensuring that no fuel ends up in the water.

What are the specific advantages compared to other solutions?

No relevant changes to the engine or exhaust system are required. The installation can be done quickly (usually in a day) e.g. during a short standstill time. The AquaFuel system requires very little space. Alternative systems, such as exhaust gas treatment systems filter pollutants out or neutralize them. Our systems ensure that harmful emissions are not produced in such a large amount. Exhaust aftertreatment systems require very much space, more maintenance and the acquisition and operating costs are higher.

What emission standards and EU directives can be met by an AquaFuel system?

Normally CII for barges and TIER III or IMO III for seagoing vessels. The specific values depend on the initial values of the particular engine. To achieve the best emission reduction the engine settings may require some changes.

When will the investment be profitable?

The lower fuel consumption of up to 6% can make the system profitable within a relatively short time. Where access to waters and waterways depends on meeting emission standards, our AquaFuel system provides a comparatively low budget solution to comply with the required limits and guarantees that your vessels will have access to these waterways. Thus the investment can pay off very quickly.

Will there be changes to the intervals of maintenance of the engine? Will additional maintenance be required?

No changes in the maintenance of the engine are to be expected.

What are the costs for maintenance?

The interval of maintenance for our AquaFuel-system is at least a year, depending on the particular constellation of engine and operating time of the system. The actual effort for maintenance and therfore the costs are very low.

Who will maintain the system?

Maintenance of our AquaFuel-system will be provided by us or by a contractor.
